Lead Your Life-Eight Respected Singaporeans Reflect on Leadership,Labour and Love
"Leadership in the Internet not a one-way relationship - of the leader having the ideas, the plan, and the others following like the clone armies in Star Wars. In this day and age, clone armies are weak armies. Mindless supporters are worthless. Leadership becomes a chmistry among people, enabling them to draw energy from one another." - George Yeo, Former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Singapore

In Lead Your Life, eight prominent old boys of St Joseph/s Institution - Cabinet Minister, University President, and CEOs - recount the times they were called on to exercise leadership and how they responded to that call in a series of frank exchanges with Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez.

In a series of conversations on the art of leadership held in 2010-2011 at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore - dubbed The Fullerton-SJI Leadership Lectures - distinguished alumni of St Joseph's Institution shared what they had learnt about leadership, and the leaders they had become, with a younger generation.

From government leaders to business chiefs, iconoclasts to intellectuals - they are all leaders in their own right. Their leadership moments ranged from a call to serve as a deputy prime minister, the SARS epidemic, or a financial scandal at the National Kidney Foundation. Whatever the case, they shared openly how they responded to the call of leadership. Their styles and presentations differed markedly; their insights were rich and diverse, drawing on their experiences in fields such as banking, government, the arts and non-government volunteer organisations. Ideals ranged from how to build organisations, provide visionary leadership, establish trust and credibility, stay humble and grounded, manage time and stress, while preparing to plug-and-play in an increasingly complex and connected world.

Facing Faiths, Crossing Cultures

In a series of incisive and thoughtful discussions by leaders from academia, government, business and religious communities in the region and internationally, IPS has produced a collection of riveting and diverse points of view on race, relations, religion, cultural identity and nation identity, and their impact on a rapidly growing multicultural and diverse world.

New insights include the fact that diasporas, women and globalisation are the new deciding factors that will contribute to a reconfiguring of influence and political, economic and cultural developments in Singapore, Southeast Asia and indeed the world. They point to the strong possibilities, in contrast to the claims of conflict-proneness, that Singapore and the Southeast Asian region can illuminate peaceful and dialogical ways in dealing with cultural and religious issues.

Men For Others- A Portrait Of The Josephian Over The Years

St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) has been educating young people from all segments of Singapore society since 1852.

The school is rooted in the teaching traditions established by the Brothers of the Christian Order, founded by John Baptist de La Salle in France in 1680. Its mission: to imbue young boys drawn from families of all backgrounds with a sense of faith, service and community, moulding them into “Men of Integrity and Men for Others”.

This book is a story about that mission. It sketches how the school came to be set up in Bras Basah Road, where it stood through ups and downs for over a century, before moving to its present home in Malcolm Road. It also reveals how the new SJI International, to be opened officially in May 2009, came into being, and drive of the Brothers and old boys who helped bring it to life.

The SJI story is inextricably tied to that of its students, and this book is a collective portrait of the Josephian. It profiles 50 men and women who graced the school corridors over the years and grew to share in its mission and beliefs, and looks at how they are striving to keep that spirit alive by living it out in their everyday lives – as professionals, in business, in politics and public service, or simply as good fathers, husbands, sons and friends.

Money, Death And You

As Goola Warden, Senior Writer of The Edge puts it, many of us don't want to think about death, but Money, Death and You gives you very strong reasons why you should. "This book takes the common man around the minefield of wills and trusts andpolicies," she asserts.

Financial planning does not end with death. And if you, like countless others, believe that writing your will (perhaps filling in the standard forms) means that your affairs are left in order, consider these questions:

  • What happens if your will is challenged? Is it really watertight against the claims of money-grubbing relations whom you do not wish to benefit?
  • How can you protect young children or helpless dependants from incompetant (if well-intentioned) guardians?
  • How can you provide for someone and keep this a secret from others (since the contents of wills can be made public)?
  • Is a joint account a neat way to transfer your wealth to the other account holder? (You wish!)
  • If you donate money to your favourite charity in your will, would it be tax-dedictable?
  • Are your assets overseas safe from heavy foreign taxes?
  • Will your beneficiaries get their legacies quickly, or have you left them wallowing in red tape while your assets shrink in value?

Money, Death and You addresses all these issues and much more. Simply and concisely, the book provides an overall perspective of the legal issues related to death and the estate, to give readers the answers they need when they embark on their estate of succession plan - or simply want to know where the problems lie. The book includes horrendous real-life scenarios that you can avoid with some thoughtful planning.

Ophthalmic Nursing & Paramedical Handbook

Conceived as a Paramedical Handbook that could serve as a guide for paramedics in the Singapore National Eye Centre, this handbook is also eminently suitable for other medical organisations, including foreign medical establishments. Over the past 18 years, the team at the Singapore National Eye Centre has built up a wealth of experience. In this handbook, they generously share their experiences and present an easy-to-use guide for eyecare staff attending to their eye patients.

An ophthalmic care centre, particularly a tertiary centre, cannot do without a strong team of paramedical staff to support the ophthalmologists in providing excellent eyecare. Nurses are indispensable in patient care and counselling. They also perform simple outpatient procedures, assist in surgeries and are often responsible for the day-to-day running of the eye centre. Reliable, good biometrists are crucial for precise biometry measurements to facilitate accurate calculations for intraocular lens implantation in cataract surgery. Optometrists and orthoptists are essential in the assessment of patients in tertiary eye centres. Medical ophthalmic photographers perform photography and angiography, not just for case record follow-up, but also for diagnosis and management of various eye diseases.

It is with the practical needs of these essential nursing and paramedical staff in mind that this book has been put together. It also shows how the roles and duties of eyecare team members dovetail into each other.
